"And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you."
Forgiveness is one of the most powerful expressions of God's love. It is also one of the most challenging commands for believers to practice.
When someone hurts us, our natural response is often anger, resentment, or a desire for revenge. However, Jesus calls us to a higher way—the way of forgiveness.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending that wrong actions did not happen. It does not mean ignoring pain or allowing people to continue hurting us. Forgiveness means releasing the burden of bitterness and placing justice in God's hands.
Jesus demonstrated forgiveness even while suffering on the cross. He prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." If Christ could extend forgiveness in such a painful moment, He gives us grace to forgive others as well.
Unforgiveness is like carrying a heavy weight. The person who hurt you may have moved on, but bitterness can continue affecting your peace, joy, and spiritual growth.
Forgiveness is not always a one-time decision. Sometimes wounds require repeated surrender to God. Each time painful memories return, we choose again to release the offense.
God has forgiven us of far more than we could ever repay. When we understand the depth of His mercy toward us, it becomes easier to extend mercy to others.
Today, ask God to help you release any resentment you have been carrying. Freedom begins when we surrender our hurts to Him.
