"When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting."
Fasting is the voluntary denial of food or another legitimate comfort for a spiritual purpose. It creates intentional space to seek God, humble ourselves, strengthen prayer, and bring our appetites under the authority of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said, "When you fast," indicating that fasting should have a place in the lives of His followers. However, He warned against fasting for human attention. Biblical fasting is not a spiritual performance designed to make others admire us. It is an act of private devotion before God.
Fasting does not manipulate God or force Him to answer according to our wishes. We cannot earn miracles or purchase spiritual power by going without food. Fasting changes us by exposing our dependence, revealing hidden desires, and directing our hunger toward God.
The physical discomfort of fasting can become a reminder to pray. Each feeling of hunger invites us to confess, worship, read Scripture, or intercede for others. The goal is not merely to abstain from food but to feast upon the presence and Word of God.
Fasting must also be accompanied by obedience and compassion. Scripture warns against outward fasting that exists alongside injustice, conflict, or selfishness. God desires a surrendered heart that treats others with mercy and responds to their needs.
Different people may fast in different ways. Health conditions, medication, pregnancy, age, and other circumstances should be considered wisely. Some may abstain from particular foods, while others may set aside entertainment or another activity that consumes attention. The sacrifice should direct the heart toward God rather than simply becoming an exercise in deprivation.
Approach fasting with humility and clear spiritual purpose. Let it deepen your prayer, expose unhealthy attachments, and increase your hunger for God. The greatest reward of fasting is not being noticed by people but drawing nearer to the Father.
Reflection
Do I desire God Himself deeply enough to set aside something valuable so I can seek Him more intentionally?
Application
Choose a safe and appropriate fast. Establish a clear purpose, determine its duration, and use the time you would normally spend on that activity to pray and meditate on Scripture.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, teach me to fast with humility and sincere devotion. Purify my motives and reveal every appetite that has gained too much influence over me. Deepen my hunger for Your presence and help me combine fasting with prayer, obedience, and compassion. In Jesus' name, Amen.
