"Not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord."
Zeal is an earnest desire to honour God and give ourselves faithfully to His service. It grows as we remember His mercy and respond with love. A zealous heart is willing to act upon God's truth and use the opportunities He provides.
Paul places this instruction among practical commands about sincere love and life together. Christian zeal should therefore be visible in diligent work, generous care, and faithful service. Enthusiasm becomes fruitful when it leads to actions that benefit others and honour the Lord.
Our motivation needs regular examination. We can appear energetic while being driven by recognition, competition, or a desire to control. Remembering the love of Christ helps us return to serving because we belong to Him and are grateful for His grace.
Zeal must be guided by truth. Strong feelings do not make every idea wise or every action right. We need Scripture, prayer, and a willingness to receive correction so that our eagerness follows God's ways and treats people with care.
Faithful zeal continues beyond moments of excitement. It prepares carefully, keeps commitments, and completes ordinary tasks even when no one is watching. A willing heart can bring devotion to a quiet responsibility just as sincerely as to a public assignment.
Rest and shared responsibility help sustain our service. Exhaustion may leave us discouraged or impatient, and we should receive help when we need it. God's people serve as members of one body, supporting one another rather than expecting one person to carry everything.
Bring your heart before God today. If your desire to serve has faded, ask Him to renew your love and show you a useful next step. Offer Him willing, thoughtful service, trusting His Spirit to strengthen you as you work.
Reflection
Is my service motivated by love for God, and is my enthusiasm producing faithful action?
Application
Read Romans 12:9–13. Choose one neglected responsibility or opportunity to help someone, and give it careful attention today. Pray for renewed love as you serve.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, renew my love for You and my willingness to serve. Purify my motives and guide my enthusiasm through Your truth. Help me work diligently, receive correction humbly, and serve others with patience and joy. In Jesus' name, Amen.
