Walking in Love

Ephesians 5:2 (NKJV)

"Walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us."

Walking in love means allowing the love of Christ to influence every relationship, decision, conversation, and response. Love is not merely an emotion we feel when circumstances are pleasant. It is a way of life demonstrated through sacrifice, truth, patience, and faithful action.

Jesus is our greatest example. He loved people who were rejected, served those who could not repay Him, forgave His enemies, and ultimately gave His life for sinners. His love was neither weak nor sentimental. It was holy, courageous, compassionate, and willing to bear a great cost.

Walking in love does not mean approving everything people do. Genuine love speaks truth because it desires what is best for others. However, truth must be communicated with humility and grace. Words spoken correctly but without love can still cause unnecessary harm.

Love is tested most clearly when people disappoint or offend us. It is easy to love those who agree with us and treat us well. Christlike love chooses patience, forgiveness, and kindness even when the other person is difficult.

Forgiveness does not deny that harm occurred, and love does not require us to remain in unsafe situations. Wise boundaries may sometimes be necessary. Even then, we can refuse bitterness, pray for those who hurt us, and entrust justice to God.

Spiritual gifts, knowledge, and impressive acts of faith have little value when they are separated from love. Love gives spiritual power its proper purpose and makes Christian witness believable. People should encounter the character of Jesus through the way we treat them.

Walking in love requires continual dependence upon the Holy Spirit. Human affection alone is not enough. Ask God to fill your heart with His love and show you where selfishness, resentment, impatience, or pride must be surrendered.

Reflection

Do my words and actions make the love of Jesus visible, especially when I am disappointed or offended?

Application

Choose one person who is difficult for you to love. Pray for them and take one appropriate step of kindness, forgiveness, or reconciliation.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, fill my heart with the love of Christ. Remove selfishness, bitterness, pride, and impatience from me. Help me speak truth with grace, forgive those who hurt me, and serve without seeking repayment. May others encounter Jesus through the way I love them. In His name, Amen.
