Filled with the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV)

"Be filled with the Spirit."

Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not reserved for a few unusually gifted believers. It is God's desire for everyone who belongs to Christ. The command to be filled describes an ongoing life of dependence, surrender, and openness to the Spirit's transforming influence.

To be filled means allowing the Holy Spirit to influence every area of life. He desires access to our thoughts, relationships, conversations, ambitions, schedules, finances, and decisions. We cannot honestly ask Him to fill us while reserving certain rooms of the heart for our own control.

A Spirit-filled life is not identified only by dramatic experiences. It is also revealed through worship, gratitude, purity, wisdom, courage, generosity, and love. The Spirit always glorifies Jesus. His presence within us forms the character of Christ and equips us to serve others faithfully.

We cannot remain responsive to the Spirit while continually resisting His direction. Pride, unforgiveness, persistent sin, and self-reliance make our hearts less sensitive. As we confess, surrender, and obey, we make room for His deeper work. Obedience keeps our fellowship with Him tender and active.

Being filled is not a one-time achievement after which we no longer need God. We need fresh dependence every day. Yesterday's grace was sufficient for yesterday, but today's responsibilities require today's surrender. The Christian life is sustained by continually receiving from God and yielding ourselves to Him.

Come to the Father with expectation. Do not seek an experience merely for its own sake; seek deeper fellowship with the Person of the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to fill you so completely that your words, reactions, priorities, and service consistently reveal the beauty and lordship of Jesus.

Reflection

Which part of my life have I been reluctant to place under the Holy Spirit's direction?

Application

Surrender that area to God in prayer. Throughout the day, pause before important decisions and invite the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit. Take control of every area of my life. Produce the character of Jesus in me, strengthen my obedience, and empower me to fulfill Your purposes. In Jesus' name, Amen.
