The Gifts of the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:7 (NKJV)

"The manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all."

The Holy Spirit gives gifts to believers so that the church may be strengthened and the mission of Jesus may advance. Spiritual gifts are not rewards for superior Christians. They are expressions of God's grace, entrusted to ordinary people for the benefit of others.

First Corinthians 12 describes gifts such as the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healings, the working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, different kinds of tongues, and the interpretation of tongues. The same Spirit distributes these gifts according to His wisdom.

No believer possesses every gift, and no gift makes one person more valuable than another. The church is a body with many members. Each person has a contribution to make, and each member needs the others. Comparison, jealousy, and spiritual pride prevent us from appreciating God's diverse work.

The gifts must operate through love. Paul's teaching about spiritual gifts is followed by his teaching about love because power without love can become harmful. The purpose of a gift is not to display the importance of the person exercising it. Its purpose is to strengthen, encourage, comfort, guide, and serve others.

Spiritual gifts must also operate according to Scripture, with humility, accountability, and order. The Holy Spirit does not contradict the Word He inspired. We should remain open to His work while carefully testing what is spoken and done.

Do not bury what God has placed within you because of fear or insecurity. At the same time, do not force yourself into a role He has not assigned. Seek God, serve faithfully, and allow mature believers to help you recognize and develop your gifts.

Offer every gift back to God. Ask Him to use you wherever there is a need, and let love remain the motive behind everything you do.

Reflection

Am I faithfully using my spiritual gifts to strengthen others, or have fear, comparison, or pride hindered me?

Application

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you recognize your gifts. Find one practical opportunity to use what God has given you in service to your church or community.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Help me recognize, develop, and use what You have entrusted to me. Keep me humble, loving, teachable, and accountable. May every gift strengthen Your people, advance the gospel, and glorify Jesus. In His name, Amen.
